The power of payroll integration

How Exhale integrates with payroll to offer secure and accessible financial benefits.

3 minutes

A new era of employee benefits is here, made possible by new technologies and smart integrations.

While traditional financial benefits remain costly and time-intensive for employers to administer, tech-forward platforms like Exhale automate administrative work and provide flexibility for organizations of all sizes.

In particular, secure integrations with payroll systems unlock a wealth of new benefits for employers and employees alike. Read on to learn how Exhale’s payroll integration makes it easier than ever for employees to access vital financial resources.

Financial benefits for the future

When you hear "financial benefits," a 401(k) might be the first thing that comes to mind. While traditional retirement plans are still crucial, economic stressors require more modern and immediate financial tools.

Thanks to secure integrations with payroll and banking systems, newer types of benefits—such as Earned Wage Access (EWA)—are gaining popularity. EWA providers connect to payroll to give employees flexible access to their earned wages before payday. When it comes time to process payroll, pay that has already been accessed is deducted or paid back automatically.

Exhale extends beyond EWA to offer a full suite of payroll-connected financial benefits. The connection to payroll offers a more complete picture of an employee’s financial standing beyond a credit score, allowing Exhale to offer personalized lending and saving tools to better support individuals’ needs.

How it works

At Exhale, we partner with companies like Finch and Argyle to securely access information from payroll systems. These partners provide Exhale's developers with a unified Application Programming Interface (API), which allows the Exhale app to connect to multiple payroll software providers. Employers and employees then sign in to their payroll provider through Exhale to grant access to relevant data.

By accessing up-to-date employee and paycheck data at all times, Exhale can:

  • Onboard new organizations and users within minutes, eliminating the need for manual data entry from payroll.
  • Customize Perks out of the box using historical data. For example, looking at an employee's average net pay over the past 3 months, we can determine how much of their earned wages they can access as soon as they sign up.
  • Automatically calculate repayment schedules for advances, because we know exactly when payday is coming and can estimate how much of an employee's paycheck can be allocated toward repayment.
  • Stay in sync with changes made in payroll. New hires can access Exhale as soon as they’re added to payroll. Updates, like terminations, are reflected in real time, too—no extra admin effort required.

The impact of tech-forward benefits

Tech-forward benefits providers like Exhale are making a significant difference for both employees and employers.

For employees, these benefits provide easier access to wellness resources, whether it's emergency savings funds, mental health care providers, or family planning resources. Benefits are just a tap away on any mobile device.

For business owners, benefits are more affordable and accessible than ever before. With smart integrations and minimal admin work, small and medium business owners can offer valuable financial benefits that were once out of reach, while enterprise business owners can go full speed ahead knowing that their benefits will scale with them.
